What Have You Learned About Yourself?

There’s a question I love to ask when I interview people, whether in an interview, leadership conversation, coaching session, or even just a deep discussion with a friend.

“Whatever you feel comfortable sharing with, either in a personal or professional context, what would you say you have learned about yourself in the last two to three years?”

It’s a question that stops people in their tracks. It’s not small talk. It requires reflection, honesty, and a willingness to look inward. And when I ask it with intention—when I give someone space to truly think—it almost always leads to a meaningful response.

Why This Question Matters

We spend so much time moving forward, setting goals, checking off tasks, and handling what’s next that we rarely pause to look back and ask:

  • How have I changed?

  • What have I learned about myself—my strengths, my patterns, my resilience?

  • Am I showing up differently than I did two or three years ago?

When people answer, I notice something powerful: they don’t just answer for me—they answer for themselves. Often, they realize something they hadn’t fully put into words before.

The Answers That Stick With Me

I’ve heard answers that range from deep realizations about confidence and resilience to simple but profound truths about what truly matters. Some people talk about how they’ve learned to trust themselves more. Others recognize the need to set boundaries, let go of perfectionism, or embrace a different version of success than they once imagined.

And sometimes, the answer is just, “I’m still figuring that out.” And that’s okay, too.
